The Hospitality and Investment Conference 2009 Awards recognize and reward companies and individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to enhancing the profile of the hospitality industry in Southern Africa through promoting growth, investment, innovation and excellence, across all tourism sectors. The Awards foster a sense of unity towards realizing a shared vision of growth and excellence for the Southern African hospitality industry

2009 AWARD CATEGORIES

Best New Hotel Investment Award

This award recognizes advancements and innovations made in hotel development and investment that introduce standards and practice that have set new benchmarks in the industry demonstrated through financing, design and development as well as operational practices and processes. The criteria to be used to assess nominations will include size of the project, alignment to sustainable tourism practices, functionality and fit with target markets as well as impact on the wider community. All projects will include a hotel element and must have opened between 1st January 2007 and 1st March 2009.

Tourism Business Leadership Award

The leadership award recognises the individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the hospitality industry in and has demonstrated a high level of commitment and dedication to the growth and development of companies and individuals therein. The individual must have shown a pioneering spirit that has contributed towards the development of new / unique ideas that have added value to the industry and made it more internationally competitive. Their initiatives and actions must go over and beyond the scope of a ‘job spec’ and the impacts thereof be felt within and beyond a local geographic area. Descriptions of specific projects they have led as well as personal and business contributions they have made that represent leadership qualities must form part of the nomination submission.

Excellence in Travel and Tourism Reporting Award

While not necessarily members of the tourism industry, media professionals are influential in shaping perceptions, awareness and knowledge of the tourism industry on the African continent. This award seeks to recognise individuals who through print (including Web based) media have made an outstanding contribution to developing awareness and understanding of the Southern African tourism industry through interesting, well researched and accurate reporting. The work should demonstrate journalistic integrity and positively contribute to the growth and development of the industry. It should go beyond destination and event reporting and provide a critical analysis of the subject matter displaying relevant research and necessary depth. The printed article(s) must have been published between 1st January 2007 and 31st March 2009 and be submitted as part of the supporting information for the nomination. Background on the publication / news website and its target audience should be provided as well as date of publication.

Upcoming Industry ‘Mover & Shaker’ Award

This award gives recognition to a young up and coming individual who through their skills, ingenuity and energy has already had an extraordinary impact in the industry. This could include entrepreneurs and those working within organizations that have started to blaze a trail and deserve to be recognized for the positive impact they have had in the industry. Their achievements should ideally position them as a role model and source of inspiration to younger people to enter into and excel in the tourism industry. Descriptions of specific projects they have led as well as personal and business contributions they have made that represent these qualities must form part of the nomination submission.

AWARD PRIZES

The winners in each category will be awarded a prize and all finalists including winners will be given extensive recognition through media profiling at HICA 2009 as well as after the event.
